Google is full of posts & discussions of others talking about how the Yahoo smtp server (smtp.mail.yahoo.com) is slow and causing a delay, so I thought I’d join in. My Canadian ISP is Rogers, Ontario, who use the Yahoo smtp server, and until now I’ve had little problems – but in the last 24-36 hours, since 10th August 2010, sending email from Microsoft Outlook over the Yahoo mail server has been painfully delayed, and infact, I’m sure some emails haven’t been received yet, or potentially just won’t make it.
This seems to be an on-going issue for Yahoo, with many reports of the same issues, often lasting 2-3 weeks at a time, and coming around every year almost.
Rogers have no interest in taking responsibility, or even acknowledging the problem, at least when I spoke to the support team – the best and only advice was to re-install Outlook.
No matter how many times I explained that it’s not Outlook, that I have other accounts using other smtp servers in the same Outlook install, it’s not the recipients mail server as I’ve sent emails to many addresses using different servers, and that the only things connecting the delayed emails is ’smtp.mail.yahoo.com’ with the Rogers username and password, they just didn’t want to hear.
“Okay, if your email is delivering fine from webmail and if that is causing such delay in outlook then that issue is not caused on the mail server”.
was the best responce I could get…… Can you feel my frustration?
Most of my blog posts provide info on my products & services or provide a solution to a problem I’ve encountered and figured in the past. This one is little more than a rant to be honest, and one I feel better for having too, lol.
However, I do have a little tip that may help, or may be a complete co-incidence – Either way it’s worth a mention, and worth a try.
After going into my webmail, where I have my additional accounts set up, allowing them to use the smtp server I sent a couple of test emails from webmail, then flicked between the inbox, outbox and drafts of the default account, etc – and some of the delayed emails (sent from Outlook) pinged out pretty quickly after that. probably a co-incidence, but who knows?
Other solutions to get round this problem include:
- Using webmail (eww)
- Stop being so cheap, get rid of Rogers/Yahoo smtp server, and start using a professional smtp set up
The second of which I should have done a year ago when I started using Rogers and will be doing as of tomorrow.
Rant over.
